The project this time was much larger but despite there being lots of challenges with materials being obtained (national shortages etc) we were hardly aware of the impact. The whole team-John, Jim and James could not have been better and in spite of the upheaval, which was inevitable due to the task being undertaken, they made everything so much easier. Single Storey Extension, Structural Alterations & New Fitted Kitchen – Location: Colchester, Essex
It is hard to put into words just how pleased we are with our final result. From the initial consultation with Steve Friend the owner who project manages the scheme and working with his architect we were able to create an outline of what I had been thinking about for months.
Then along came Jim, John and James (the three J’s) who made the outline a reality! No small detail was ignored, and from start to finish they all exhibited such a high level of professionalism and consideration for our home. Unfortunately for them we were in lockdown and they had to cope with a one year old, a five year old, a ball crazy dog and myself and my husband. I could not find any fault. They did everything in their power to ensure we had appliances for the duration of the work and I appreciate at times this must have been inconvenient for them- but they never let us know.
No small detail was overlooked with many suggestions being spot on to achieve a flawless finish.
I wish I could list all of the individuals who effectively became part of our family for the build but I am sure when you make the decision to hire Steve Friend of Lexden Builders and his team you will get to meet them all!

Garage Conversion, Downstairs Toilet & Upstairs Bathroom – Location: Highwoods, Colchester, Essex
I have engaged Lexden Builders a few times now, firstly for a garage conversion and then subsequently for a rebuild of two bathrooms. On every occasion, the work is carried out in such a professional manner. The team are really friendly, and Steve drops in on occasion to check on how the work is progressing.
Steve comes round to the house to review what is needed, agrees an amount for the work and then provides dates. I have never known a job to move from the original date; it starts and finishes on time every time.
When the work is carried out, everything is kept tidy and a clean-up is completed at the end of each day. They have regular suppliers that they use, provide brochures, set up appointments to go and select the items you want and then they take care of the rest.
Some builders I have used in the past, the pricing changes as the job progresses, but with Lexden Builders the pricing is very transparent and rarely moves, only if you upgrade what you are asking for and even then you get options to choose from. At the end of the job, they walk you round to check that you are happy with everything too. To date I have never found a snag post completion of the job.
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone looking for work to be completed. My neighbours seem to be booking them for work too as they can see great results.
If you are looking for a builder that is reasonably priced but complete everything to a really high standard, on time and takes care of everything, this is the builder for you.

We have been saving to get our beautiful Victorian but very run-down terraced home refurbished and were inexperienced clients having always just ‘made-do’. Never again! Steve and his brilliant team of professional, hard-working, imaginative, creative, reliable and friendly workers made the whole process a breeze.
Steve is patient and flexible (we can be indecisive) and finds a solution to any problem quickly. His building team found an ingenious solution for turning the kids bedrooms into two gorgeous, evenly sized rooms, from a huge double and tiny box room; the kitchen is transformed into a modern, very cool space and the hallway, stairs and landing are just stunning. Gone is the horrible chipwood wallpaper and airtex ceilings, replaced with smooth, beautifully plastered and painted walls and ceilings. Simply stunning work carried out in our house. Steve & all of his team have been amazing, efficient, polite & friendly during 4 weeks of work & we are truly overwhelmed with the results. Lexden builders project managed the entire work. We didn’t need to do anything & disruption was minimal. Doors were secured to reduce brick dust travelling through the house. Just a quick note Steve to praise the excellent transformation that you and your highly efficient and friendly team have made to our house. We have lived in our old Victorian house for 15 years and the 20 years before that it was a bedsit property. Therefore it was as tired and rundown a house as you can imagine from outside. All of the 15 years that we have lived here we have hated the front of the house…….. Not anymore!!! I have now used Lexden Builders twice now and on both occasions I have been delighted with the results. The first time to was rectify and resolve issues with cracks in the original render on the house exterior, hardie plank most of the existing house and feature brick copings to all of the windows which was all completed to a very high standard.
The most recent occasion was to extend the patio, replace the existing concrete patio slabs and to build two steps down from the house to the patio.
Steve arranged a date and time to visit and review the required work. Steve’s input during his visit was essential in guiding us to make the right decisions for type of paving to use and the correct height of the steps from the house down to the patio.
I have nothing but praise for the professionalism and helpfulness of the Lexden Builders team, who undertook the work to build the steps and lay the patio. The guys made sure I was fully comfortable with the height of the step from the house, down on to the patio. They also gave great advice on choosing the correct brick for the base of the step that would blend in with the existing brickwork. In addition, Steve would visit each morning and review progress of the works with the team.
At the end of the work the team ensured that everything was clean and tidy, which was much appreciated.
I have no hesitation whatsoever, in recommending Lexden Builders and will certainly be happy to use them in the future. Many thanks for a fantastic and professional job.

Front Boundary Wall to a Listed House – Location: Colchester, Essex
I recently had a front wall built by Steve Friend which was completed on time and was competitively priced. Steve and his team managed the job with minimal disruption and cleaned up on a daily basis. I was highly satisfied with the quality of their work which was over and above my expectations. Considering this was work on a Listed Building the quality had to be excellent and it was.
Because of the nature of the work the requirements changed on a daily basis and these were efficiently accommodated by the skilled workforce. It was actually a pleasure in having them around.
Hardly a day passed when the builders were not complimented on their work by those walking by and I was continually asked whether I would recommend Steve’s Company. I have no hesitation in doing so.
